I’m having a supremely hard time wrapping my head around the fact that Christmas is now LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY. How did that happen? I think this is a mark of adulthood — as a kid, December took for-ev-er because ALL you were doing was counting down to Christmas. Did anyone else used to make those paper chains out of red and green construction paper and hang them around your room and tear one link off each day to count down to Christmas? Kids probably don’t even do that anymore. It’s too low-tech. They probably use their 3D printers to make fancy countdown chains now.
1 | I haven’t finished my Christmas shopping
Also, I’m a little pissed because I ordered something off Amazon on December 14th and it was from an outside retailed or something, so was only eligible for standard 4-10 day shipping and it looks like it’ll take the FULL TEN DAYS. The tracking info says it should be delivered by 8 PM on Christmas Eve. Poop.
But yeah. Christmas shopping. I have — it’s hard to explain — very specific ideas about vague things I want to get. Like one gift, say, is a book on a certain subject, but I don’t have a specific book in mind, so I need to browse the bookstore and hope I find one that’ll fit what I’m picturing. And I was NOT SMART about looking on Etsy or online shops and now I’m relegated to buying in actual stores. Which isn’t a bad thing as long as I find everything. So Saturday I’ll be one determined elf on a mission in San Diego. (Though not at the mission in San Diego, although…they do have a gift shop there, right? Hmm…)
2 | I’m not a fan of “Advent calendars” that are more about giving treats or an excuse to do Christmas activities like making gingerbread houses.
Giving treats and making gingerbread houses are awesome, don’t get me wrong. And I used to love those cardboard calendars where you’d get a little piece of chocolate each day when I was a kid. But — Husband and I had a conversation about this — I’ve realized I sort of compartmentalize and separate “secular Christmas” with “religious Christmas.” Charlie Brown, of course, blends them together beautifully, and I guess they are really two sides of the same coin. But there’s a difference between giving presents and Santa Claus and all that, and celebrating the birth of Jesus, and to me, Advent calendars fall squarely on the birth of Jesus side.
But that’s just me! Your creative, beautifully crafted, Pinterest-worthy Advent calendars does not affect my enjoyment or celebration of the holiday! Carry on!
3 | Christmas movies I have yet to watch:
Love Actually, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rudolph (God I love those Claymation classics), Muppet Christmas Carol, Home Alone 2, The Santa Clause, the second half of It’s A Wonderful Life.
Clearly I have a busy weekend ahead of me.
4 | It’s supposed to be in the 70s next week.
Like, the mid-high 70s for a few days. San Diego is seriously saying “Eff you, winter.”
5 | Not Christmas-related, but…
Ages ago, I put Danielle LaPorte’s Fire Starter Sessions and The Desire Map on hold at the library. I’m currently #1 and #2 in the queue for them. And have been for going on two months. Which I think means someone has checked out both books and has been keeping them past due. I am just tickled at the irony that those books, which you’d think would be checked out by fairly conscientious, generous, not-crappy people, have been rudely kept that long.
Christmas thoughts? Library thoughts? Other thoughts? Let’em rip.
